Make a Tax-Deductible Stock Donation
Supporting Forest Service Employees for Environmental Ethics by donating stocks offers benefits to donors, including significant tax savings.
- Donating stock allows you to avoid both capital gains and state income taxes that you would otherwise need to pay if you sold the stock to donate cash.
- You can claim a charitable deduction for the current fair market value of your stock at the time of donation.
- Donating stock exempts you from the “wash-sale” rule, allowing you to repurchase the stock at its current fair market value, reset your shares at a higher cost-basis, and maintain your portfolio composition.
Three types of stock can be donated to nonprofits:
- Publicly-traded Stocks. These are stocks that you can buy on the stock market — like shares of Amazon or Berkshire Hathaway. Donating these is simple because we always know how much they’re worth. All you have to do is look at their latest price on the stock market.
- Mutual Funds or Exchange-Traded Funds. If you have money in a mutual fund or an ETF, you can donate a portion of that. It’s essentially the same as giving whole shares of a single company’s stock.
- Privately-held Assets. If you want to give private stock, the process is simple. You’ll just need to have your shares valued by a broker before we can begin.
To make a gift of stock, please submit the following form before authorizing a transfer of shares to FSEEE’s account. To ensure that FSEEE can identify and acknowledge your gift, especially for tax purposes, we must receive this information before you make a transfer.
